Should I use 64 bit Windows XP?
I tried to do this using Virtual PC in Vista--but the whole thing was just too slow. So, I installed XP Professional on a slave hard drive. Afterwards, I followed some directions I found to create a dual boot menu here: http://windowssecrets.com/2008/02/14/01-Make-your-computer-dual-boot-Vista-and-XP Everything

Partition Magic installs OK on Vista but any attempt to actually use it results in catastrophic failure. What OSes? If they're all Windows then the Windows Bootloader should handle it. Have you tried it with Vista? Yes. I tried Suse Linux 10 on a dual boot XP/Vista machine and it FUBAR'd the Vista boot manager, which is different from the XP one. I had to fixboot from a Windows CD to get Windows back to being bootable, which of course FUBAR'd the Linux bit so that wouldn't boot.

Colin, He's not in a dual boot situation so each drive is individual. You would have to do this if Vista was the boot manager. Don, Choose which ever OS you want to boot first. For me it's Vista. Mrs. Phist didn't want Vista, and about that she was quite firm. If Vista was on the Laptop it would have to be "upgraded" to XP/Linux dual boot. Beyond telling which hard drive will get control for booting, the Hard Drive Boot Order also defines the meaning of "x" in "rdisk(x)" in the boot.ini boot menu file used by the WinNT/2K/XP family of OSes. That is, "rdisk(0)" specifies the hard drive at the head of the list, "rdisk(1)" specifies the next hard drive,

Dual boot Vista with XP Pro?
If
you don't have dual boot, it usually means that the Vista installation did not see your XP drive (was it unplugged?) if so that's just fine. You should be able to boot from bios to the drive you want. Go to your bios and set XP hd as first boot. That means, if you don't touch anything XP will boot first.

Should I use the program to install XP or just directly install it in Ultimat? Thanks. It is incorrect that "Vista does not allow dual boot". You can dual-boot Vista and another operating system. However, there are issues with XP wiping out Vista's System Restore points if you don't use a third-party boot loader
